چکیده

Differential ellipsometric interrogation of surface plasmon (SP) resonances is a technique that gives ultrahigh sensitivity to refractive index changes, and it may provide the basis for chemical and biological sensors. In this study, a liquid crystal polarization modulator has been developed to provide such a differential technique. A refractive index sensitivity of 2310−7 refractive index units is demonstrated, which is at least as sensitive as more established SP sensing techniques. The use of a liquid crystal modulator allows for low-voltage signal modulation and also feedback locking to zero. Possibly more important, it leads to pixelization for array sensing and for potential imaging. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.1806273]

Surface-plasmon spatial light modulators based on liquid crystal.

The development of a new class of spatial light modulator (SLM), which uses modulation of lossy guided waves generated by surface-plasmon resonance, is described. The potential advantages of this technique are explained, including increased response uniformity and enhanced sensitivity and speed. An optically addressed SLM that is based on a nematic liquid crystal with a spatial resolution bette...

Study of the Effect of Nematic Order Degradation in Liquid Crystal-Based Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors

This paper presents a new analysis of optical sensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon and nematic liquid crystal (LC) sensitive layer in the partially ordered state. In particular, the paper studies the influence of degradation in the LC ordering state on the behavior of the plasmon resonance parameters. The degradation in the LC ordering is represented by the order paramete...

Thin SnOx films for surface plasmon resonance enhanced ellipsometric gas sensing (SPREE)

Background: Gas sensors are very important in several fields like gas monitoring, safety and environmental applications. In this approach, a new gas sensing concept is investigated which combines the powerful adsorption probability of metal oxide conductive sensors (MOS) with an optical ellipsometric readout. This concept shows promising results to solve the problems of cross sensitivity of the...

Polarization interferometry for real-time spectroscopic plasmonic sensing.

We present quantitative, spectroscopic polarization interferometry phase measurements on plasmonic surfaces for sensing applications. By adding a liquid crystal variable wave plate in our beam path, we are able to measure phase shifts due to small refractive index changes on the sensor surface. By scanning in a quick sequence, our technique is extended to demonstrate real-time measurements. Whi...
